Karl Bartlett was the star of the NCC Invitational held at Manor of Groves last weekend (5 and 6 October). The two-day event, loosely connected with golf but with bar consumption a necessary requirement, saw 16 NCC members do battle.
The Invitational was first started back at West Runton, Norfolk in 1980, making this year’s “fiasco” its 45th year of competition. Whippersnapper Bartlett, playing off 11 handicap, was in third place after Day One – his 29 points trailing Carl Gooch, 32, and Steve Bartlett (as in his father) on 31.
With Gooch unable to make Day Two, the Bartys paired with Dave Arnold for the TV leaders group on Sunday. And Barty Junior took the honours with an impressive 32 points for a 61 total, dad Steve finishing two back on aggregate with a second-round 28 and Arnold firing 29 to add to his opening 28 and third place. Two-time winner (yawn) Bob Halls had best Day Two score with Gooch taking Day One.
Organiser Andy Totham said; “As usual there were great performances from all players. There was a very high standard. Just a shame we then had to leave the bar and play golf….”
Next year’s Invitational is at Wensum Valley, Norfolk.
